UGC Criteria for Appointment of Teacher/Professor in Higher Education

Getting a job in higher education in India can be done at three levels: first as an assistant professor, then as an associate professor or reader, and finally as a professor.

There are different rules and criteria for each level of entry, and if you can establish an eligibility criterion, you can apply for the position easily.

The University Grants Commission has published regulations from time to time on the minimum requirements for hiring teachers and other academic staff in universities and colleges, as well as measures to maintain standards in higher education.

These standards were most recently published by the UGC Regulations 2018 together with all modifications made, and they may occasionally be revised therein.

The following criteria are sorted out and presented for your consideration after the critical review and reading of the present UGC Regulations (2018), which include the rules for hiring teachers in universities.

Eligibility Criteria for UGC Assistant Professors

  • Master’s Degree with 55% marks in relevant/allied subjects from an Indian or accredited foreign university
  • The candidate’s Ph.D. degree was awarded in regular mode only.
  • Evaluation of the Ph.D. thesis after final submission by at least two external examiners.
  • An open final Ph.D. thesis viva voce examination of the candidate has been conducted for the award of the PhD degree.
  • The candidate must have published two research papers from his/her Ph.D. work, of which at least one must be in a refereed journal.
  • A candidate has made at least two presentations in conference/seminars based on his or her Ph.D. work.
  • A candidate should have research and subject expertise in his/her field.

UGC Criteria for Assistant Professor Post Shortlisting for Interview:

  • The UGC regulations on minimum requirements for assistant professor appointments specify a total of 100 marks for the shortlisting criterion for interviews Of assistant professors in universities and other academic personnel in institutions.

Graduation academic score

  • Graduation with an 80% or higher is worth 15 marks.
  • Graduation with a grade point average of 60% to 80% = 13 points
  • Graduation with 55% less than 60% equals 10.2 marks.

Post-graduate academic performance

  • Post-Graduation (PG) grade point average of 80% or higher = 28 marks
  • Post-Graduation with 60% to less than 80% = 25 Marks
  • Post-Graduation with 55% to 60% = 20 Marks

M.Phil./Ph.D./NET/JRF Degree

  • M.Phil. with a grade point average of 60% or higher = 07 marks.
  • M.Phil. with a mark range of 55% to 60% = 05 marks
  • A Ph.D. degree has 30 points for only a Ph.D.
  • A maximum of 30 marks for M.Phil and Ph.D.
  • NET with JRF 07 marks and only NET 05 marks.
  • JRF/NET/SET Maximum Marks-07
  • Only 10 Pints for Research Paper Publication (2 points for each research publication included in peer-reviewed or UGC-listed journals).
  • 10 pints for teaching experience Teaching and Post-Doctoral Experience (2 marks for one year each)

In spite of that, you can get 3 marks for international and 2 marks for national awards, but it may not be the award of the paper presentation.

  • The candidate should have a good academic record with a PhD degree in the relevant, related, or concerned discipline.
  • A candidate must have a Master’s degree with at least 55% of the possible points or a comparable grade.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of eight years of teaching or research experience in a role equating to that of an assistant professor.
  • Evidence of published work in the form of at least 5 books, research/policy papers, or other types of publications
  • The candidate has to design new curricula and courses and implement technology-mediated innovation in education.
  • A candidate must guide doctorate candidates and research students in the teaching and learning process.
  • A minimum score as outlined in the Performance-Based Appraisal System (PBAS), which is based on the Academic Performance Indicator (API)

UGC Criteria for Direct Professor Appointment

  • The candidate must have a Ph.D. in the area of concern, related or relevant field.
  • Publish a minimum of 10 research publications in peer-reviewed or UGC-listed journals while actively engaged in research.
  • The candidate has a total research score of 120 as per the annexure III criteria of UGC.
  • teaching experience at a university or college as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor for at least ten years.
  • The candidate has research experience at a university, national-level institution, or industry.
  • At least two Ph.D. candidates were guided successfully during their teaching tenure.
  • contribution to educational innovation, courses, and technology-mediated teaching and learning.
  • An exceptional professional with a Ph.D. in a relevant or allied field from academia, research institutions, or industry.
  • Candidates who have made significant contributions to knowledge in the concerned/allied/relevant discipline, as documented
